It provides students with basic knowledge of fibres, yarns and fabrics as the major materials making up a garment. It also introduces the properties, construction, production, end uses and quality evaluation of various textile materials
Course Content
- Introduction to textile materials:
- Fibres: types, properties, end uses and analysis (e.g. fibre identification)
- Yarns: types, properties, end use and analysis (e.g. yarn count, twist)
- Fabrics: types (structures), properties, end use and analysis (e.g. density, gauge, construction)
- Production of textile materials:
- Yarn: manufacturing technology and process flow
- Fabric (knit and woven): manufacturing technology and process flow
- Non-woven fabric formation
- Quality aspects of textile materials
- Evaluation of textile materials
- Defects
- Care instructions and labelling
